Tanglefree Fully Flocked Mallard Decoy
Each October, like clockwork, we make our pilgrimage to North Dakota. It’s a ritual steeped in frost-covered marsh grass, early morning coffee barely warm in hand, and the endless open skies of the prairie pothole region. The trucks roll in loaded down—mud-caked trailers, dogs already whining with anticipation, and of course, the decoy bags we swear weigh more each year.
Two seasons ago was particularly brutal. A cold front pushed through the first morning we were there, bringing sideways sleet and winds that turned the water into chop. It was the kind of weather that tests everything: your patience, your gear, and your resolve. But it also brings birds, and if your spread looks right, you’ll be rewarded.
That’s where the Tanglefree Flocked Mallard Decoys earned their keep.
Let’s get straight to the point: these decoys flat-out fool ducks. The flocked heads add a level of depth and realism that’s hard to overstate. In the soft morning light or during overcast, blustery afternoons, they don't shine, they don't glare, they just look like ducks.
I watched a pair of smart, late-season mallards circle our slough three times before locking up and cupping right into the pocket. It wasn’t the calling. I should rephrase that, it definitely wasn’t the calling. It wasn’t some jerk rig setup. It was the visual those decoys gave from 60 yards out. The body paint is matte, consistent, and natural-looking. The subtle detail in the feather texture and coloration, especially in the hens, sets them apart from most decoys on the market.
Looks only get you so far in the field. Durability is what keeps you from cussing while pulling decoys in sideways sleet.
We beat the hell out of these things. They got tossed in and out of trailers, dragged across ice shelves, and banged against frozen ground. The flocking stayed put, even after rides in the back of the truck without the usual tender handling. The keels are rugged and balanced, anchoring solidly in wind-driven chop without spinning like tops. Paint adhesion held strong, and we didn’t notice any peeling, flaking, or fading, even on decoys that had been in use for multiple seasons.
We’ve all used decoys that look great out of the box but don’t survive a hard hunt. These aren’t them. The Tanglefree flocked mallards have proven, season after season, that they can take a licking and keep floating; and look good doing it.
In North Dakota, everything’s tested, your scouting, your setup, your calling, your dog. The Tanglefree Flocked Mallard Decoys passed every test we threw at them. They're not the cheapest decoys you’ll find, but they’re worth every penny when that suspicious pair of late season greenheads finishes without flaring.
They bring realism that earns trust from wary ducks and the durability that earns trust from hunters like us. When you're a thousand miles from home and only have a few precious days in the field, you can't afford gear that cuts corners.
These decoys don't. And that’s why they’ve earned a permanent place in our trailer.
